2007 Vietti Barbera D'Alba

Quick Pizza Pairing

Ok, so who cares that you pairing wine with pizza?
If you take the time to make a good match, it's just as classy and as enjoyable as any other occasion. Since there are far fewer types of pizza then there are wine varietals, decide on a type of pizza first.

Pizza	Recommended Wines
Cheese Pizza	Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Zinfandel
Fresh Tomato Pizza	Cabernet Franc
Pepperoni Pizza	Barbera, Chianti
Pizza with White Sauce	Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Sausage Pizza	Zinfandel, Syrah
Vegetarian Pizza	Chianti, Pinot Noir

So, what if you needed to choose 1 wine for any pizza?

A juicy, light to medium bodied red wine is what I reach for most often when pairing wine with pizza. The red fruit flavors of the wine will pair with the tomato sauce component of the pie, and the vibrancy and the lighter style of the wine will not compete with the various meat and vegetable toppings often used. I also like to stay away wines that exhibit too much oak influence as it often interferes with the complex flavors of a pizza with more than a couple different toppings. Try an Italian Barbera like
the 2007 Vietti Barbera D'Alba.

As with all other forms of wine pairing advice, do what tastes best.
If you find Merlot and Anchovy Pizza to be the most irresistible combination in the culinary world, don't give that up for the sake of
a more "traditional" pairing.
Don't be afraid to experiment!
